Poly Labs Sound Attenuation Polyurethane Foam (or sound absorbing foam), is utilized by leading audio electronics brands and industrial component OEM’s for soundproofing structures, noise-cancelling headphones and sound absorption for acoustic treatment. Polyurethane (PU) serves as an ideal material candidate for sound reverberation and reduction. Poly Labs manufactures PU products compatible with audio and communication system interfaces.
PU Foam for Sound Absorption
Poly Labs poured polyurethane (PU) foam systems are used for noise cancellation in headphones and sound reduction in structures such as walls, floors and ceilings. Open cell foams tend to be more efficient for sound absorption. However, many factors come into play when evaluating which type of polyurethane foam should be used to absorb, attenuate or completely cancel sounds. The factors related to material selection include:
- Foam cell size
- Cell structure
- Material density
- Foam thickness
- Frequency of sound waves
Polyurethane foams are utilized in over-the-ear audio equipment and for specialty sound dampening applications. Poly Labs poured polyurethane foam ear cushion componentss are utilized by leading audio equipment brands to manufacture headphones (listening only) and headsets (listening, speaking and communicating). We partner closely with our partners and typically engineer special formulations for each customer to meet their specific needs.
Open vs. Closed Cell: Polyurethane Foam for Sound Attenuation
Poly Labs open cell polyurethane foam is recognized for its mechanical, electrical and acoustic properties. Often times, open cell foams are used in footwear applications for footwear inserts. Open cell PU foams provide exceptional qualities of being lightweight and comfortable.
In contrast, closed cell foams are typically a more dense material that may exhibit more efficiency of absorbing low-frequency sounds. Poly Labs rigid foam is low-density, and generally used for insulation panels. However, certain formulations of rigid foams are utilized in shoe soles and helmet liners.
